How to set an Airbnb extra guest fee with your own numbers
Price an Airbnb extra guest fee from linen, utility, and supply costs you estimate per guest per night, and set the guest count after which the fee applies.
By bnbutils ·
On this page
Set the extra guest fee from the cost you pay for each extra guest each night: linens, utilities, and supplies you estimate yourself. Then choose the guest count after which Airbnb applies the fee. Adults and children count. Infants do not.
The cost is yours. The count is a setting on the listing. The worked figures below are a made-up example. They are not a suggested fee, and they are not a recommended guest count. This is a planning estimate, not pricing, tax, or legal advice.

Extra guest fee from your own numbers
Cost per extra guest per night
Count only what this guest adds. Leave out a cost the cleaning fee or the nightly price already covers.
The guest count the fee starts after
One stay in the fee calculator
Your cost per extra guest per night
Add the three amounts you would actually spend for one more guest on one night:
cost per extra guest per night = linens + utilities + supplies
stay cost = extra guests × nights × cost per extra guest per night
Extra guests are the adults and children above the count you chose. An infant is not in that count. The nightly price calculator does not have this guest count. It spreads monthly utilities and per-stay supplies across booked nights for every guest. Use it when you fold this cost into the nightly rate. Use the lines above when the cost belongs only to the guests past the threshold.
The cleaning fee calculator prices one turnover, a flat cost for the stay. How to set an Airbnb cleaning fee is that fee. If the cleaning fee already recovers the extra towel, leave that towel out of the linen line here.
The currency control on the calculators changes labels and number formatting. It does not convert one currency into another. Enter every amount in the same currency.
A made-up example
Every amount and every count in this section is made up. Replace them. They are here so the arithmetic can be checked. They are not a market fee, an average, or a benchmark.
Per extra guest per night:
- Linens 6
- Utilities 4
- Supplies 2
cost per extra guest per night = 6 + 4 + 2 = 12
The host in this example sets the fee to start after 2 guests. That 2 is made up. It is not a guest count Airbnb publishes as a recommendation. The reservation is 4 adults, 0 children, and 1 infant, for 3 nights. The infant does not count. Guests who count are 4. Extra guests are 4 − 2 = 2.
stay cost = 2 × 3 × 12 = 72
A one-night stay for the same party costs 2 × 1 × 12 = 24. A five-night stay costs 2 × 5 × 12 = 120. Those lengths are the same made-up inputs. They are not a pattern of how guests book.
How Airbnb’s setting works
Add an extra guest fee, checked on 28 October 2026, says you choose how many guests can book before an extra guest fee is charged. The page’s own illustration is a listing set for 6 guests: you can charge an extra fee for each guest after the second or third guest, and so on. That illustration is Airbnb’s description of the control. It is not this example’s threshold of 2, and it is not a maximum this site is suggesting.
The same page says:
- You set one extra guest fee amount. It applies to each additional guest. You cannot set different amounts for individual additional guests or based on a guest’s age.
- When booking, guests add adults, children, and infants. The fee applies to adults and children, based on the number you set for the fee to start. Infants do not count toward the guest count and are not charged an extra guest fee.
- A new fee applies only to future reservations.
- If a confirmed reservation needs more people, you can send a trip change request to update the guest count. If the updated number is at or above the number you set for the fee, the fee is included in the updated price.
Additional fees calls it a flat fee for each additional guest beyond a default number you choose. The fee is not included in the nightly price you set. Guests see a higher price when you add it. What guests pay describes the same charge: some hosts charge it for each additional guest beyond a set number. The guest’s total includes the nightly price, additional fees, Airbnb’s service fees, and taxes (additional fees).
The extra-guest-fee page does not say the saved amount is multiplied by the number of nights. The additional-fees page does not say that either. For this made-up 3-night stay, 72 ÷ 2 extra guests = 36. That 36 is the per-guest amount that matches the 72 only at 3 nights. The one-night cost above would be 24 ÷ 2 = 12 per additional guest. The five-night cost would be 120 ÷ 2 = 60 per additional guest. One saved amount cannot equal all three. When guests want to bring more people says that if you can accommodate the larger group, you send a trip change that includes the additional cost per night for the extra guests. If you cannot accommodate them, the page says to tell the guest and ask them to cancel, and that the refund follows your cancellation policy. This guide does not interpret a cancellation.
Read the fee line in your Airbnb account. If the field you see multiplies by nights, the stay charge is not the 36 or the 12 by itself. The rows further down put 72 in Other host fees because 72 is this stay’s cost in the example. They are not a claim that saving a particular number produces a charge of 72.
The fee is not the guest limit. A party can be inside the house-rule maximum and still be past the fee threshold. Airbnb’s illustration on the extra-guest-fee page is that kind of split: a listing for 6, and a fee that can start earlier. How to write Airbnb house rules is the maximum you save under house rules. This page does not state an occupancy number for a property. Local limits are yours to confirm. This is not legal advice.
On desktop, the extra-guest-fee page gives these steps:
- Click Calendar and select the listing you want to change.
- Click Pricing, then tap Fees.
- Click Extra guest fee and enter the amount.
- Click Save.
The nightly price breakdown leaves extra guest fees out of the nightly price you set and out of that breakdown. Guests still see a higher total (price breakdown, additional fees). Pet fees are the exception named on the price-breakdown page. How to set an Airbnb pet fee with your own numbers is that fee. The figures there are a made-up example.
What you keep under each fee
Airbnb’s service-fee page, checked on 28 October 2026, says the service fee is a percentage of the nightly price and any fees you charge, excluding the guest service fee and taxes. The extra guest fee is one of those host-charged fees. Airbnb host service fees explained quotes the percentages. The Airbnb fee calculator uses:
booking subtotal = nightly rate × nights + cleaning fee + other host fees
The rows below are that calculator for one made-up stay. Nightly rate 110, 3 nights, cleaning fee 0, taxes passed through 0. The percentages are the calculator’s starting values: a 3% split host fee, a 14.1% split guest fee, and a 15.5% host-only fee. Those host figures are the ones Airbnb states for most hosts. 14.1% is the low end of the published guest range, because the help page does not give one typical guest rate. The amounts are in whatever currency you select. The calculator does not convert them.
Other host fees are 72 when the row includes this stay’s extra-guest cost, and 0 when the party is at the threshold of 2 and the fee does not apply. The cleaning fee stays 0 so the 6 of linens is not also charged as a turnover fee.
No extra-guest charge. Booking subtotal 330.00.
- Split fee: host service fee 9.90, guest service fee 46.53, guest pays 376.53, Airbnb keeps 56.43, host payout 320.10.
- Host-only fee: host service fee 51.15, guest service fee 0.00, guest pays 330.00, Airbnb keeps 51.15, host payout 278.85.
Extra-guest charge of 72, typed as other host fees. Booking subtotal 402.00.
- Split fee: host service fee 12.06, guest service fee 56.68, guest pays 458.68, Airbnb keeps 68.74, host payout 389.94.
- Host-only fee: host service fee 62.31, guest service fee 0.00, guest pays 402.00, Airbnb keeps 62.31, host payout 339.69.
Moving that charge from 0 to 72 in this example changes the stay by:
- Split fee, guest pays: 82.15. The guest service fee is 56.68 on the 402.00 subtotal and 46.53 on the 330.00 subtotal. The difference is 10.15, and 72 + 10.15 = 82.15. 14.1% of 72 is 10.152. The calculator rounds each guest service fee half up, away from zero, to the nearest hundredth before the two stays are compared.
- Split fee, host payout: 69.84 (72 minus 2.16, which is 3% of 72).
- Host-only fee, guest pays: 72.00. The guest service fee stays 0.00.
- Host-only fee, host payout: 60.84 (72 minus 11.16, which is 15.5% of 72).
Replace 3%, 14.1%, and 15.5% with the percentages in your account before you treat these rows as your stay. The service-fee page says most hosts pay 3% under the split fee. Most hosts pay 15.5% under the single fee. Guests pay a service fee of 14.1% to 16.5% of the booking subtotal, and the page says that guest fee may be higher or lower depending on the booking. Listings in Brazil and Mexico pay 4% under the split fee, and they pay 16% under the single fee. Some split-fee hosts pay more than 3%. Under the single fee, remaining hosts typically pay 14% to 16%. For a cross-currency booking, Airbnb says the guest service fee includes an additional amount, up to 16.5% of the booking subtotal. Where a host has moved to the single fee, Airbnb says no guest service fee is charged (what guests pay).
The calculator rounds each money result half up, away from zero, to the nearest hundredth. It does not add VAT on top of the percentage you enter. Airbnb says VAT may apply and that the service fee shown to hosts and guests is VAT-inclusive where applicable.
When the cost stays in the nightly price
A party at or under the threshold does not pay this fee, and does not cause this cost, in the example. A nightly rate that includes the 72 charges that party anyway.
The nightly price calculator is where a rate is built from monthly costs, a per-stay cost, occupancy, and the host fee you type. It has no extra-guest count. How to set an Airbnb nightly price from your costs walks through a made-up rate. The 110 in the rows above is not that rate. It is the nightly price typed for this fee example, before the extra-guest charge.
A guest may not book, and may not bring the extra people, at the numbers this page displays.

Common questions
After how many guests does Airbnb charge the extra guest fee?
You choose the number. Airbnb's extra-guest-fee page says you can charge for each guest after a count you set. Its illustration is a listing for 6 guests, with a fee for each guest after the second or third, and so on (https://www.airbnb.com/help/article/1507). Adults and children count. Infants do not count toward that guest count and are not charged the fee. The count of 2 in the made-up example is not that illustration and not a recommended threshold.
Is the extra guest fee charged per night?
The extra-guest-fee page says you set one amount, and that amount applies to each additional guest. It does not say the amount is multiplied by the number of nights, and it does not let you set a different amount by guest or by age (https://www.airbnb.com/help/article/1507). The additional-fees page calls it a flat fee for each additional guest beyond a number you choose (https://www.airbnb.com/help/article/2385). A different page, about a guest who wants to bring more people, says a trip change can include the additional cost per night for the extra guests (https://www.airbnb.com/help/article/1515). Read the fee line in your account before you treat a per-night cost as the saved amount.
Does the extra guest fee replace the guest limit?
No. The fee is a price for guests beyond a count you choose. The maximum number of overnight guests is saved with the house rules. How to write Airbnb house rules is that maximum. Airbnb's own illustration on the extra-guest-fee page is a listing that allows 6 guests and a fee that can start after the second or third (https://www.airbnb.com/help/article/1507). The fee does not raise the maximum.
Are 6, 4, and 2 costs to copy onto a listing?
No. Linen cost of 6, utilities of 4, and supplies of 2, per extra guest per night, are made up so the arithmetic is visible. So are the threshold of 2 guests, the party of 4 adults and 1 infant, the 3 nights, and the nightly rate of 110. They are not a market fee, an average, or a benchmark. Replace them with your own costs and the fee percentages from your Airbnb account. The result is a planning estimate, not pricing, tax, or legal advice.
