Startup cost estimator
Add the furniture, setup, permit, and other startup amounts you enter. See the total, a category breakdown, and how many months of net profit that cash would take to recoup.
Inputs stay on this device
Every amount starts at zero. A zero is an empty line, not a suggested price. The tool does not look up furniture prices, permit fees, or a typical startup budget. Safety items, permits, and deposits are whatever you type. This page does not say which items or permits a local rule requires, and it does not give tax, legal, or safety advice.
Estimated startup cost: $0.00. Months to recoup are off until monthly net profit is above zero

What the result means
Core formula
startup cost = sum of rounded category amounts + the first 20 custom lines; months to recoup = startup cost ÷ monthly net profit - Each amount is clamped at zero, then rounded half up to the nearest hundredth. A negative amount or a non-numeric amount becomes zero. A finite amount that cannot be stored as a safe cent count makes the total unavailable.
- The startup cost adds the 13 category amounts and the first 20 custom lines. A later custom line is left out. A custom line is its own part of the total. It is not added to a suggested category.
- A line's share is that rounded amount divided by the startup cost. Shares are left out when the total is zero. Amounts on the page are shown to the nearest hundredth. That display matches the rounded amounts.
- Months to recoup divides the startup cost by the monthly net profit you enter, after that profit is rounded the same way. The months are unavailable when the rounded profit is not above zero. Under 12 months, the page shows months to the nearest tenth. At 12 months or more, it shows years to the nearest tenth, the same way as the break-even calculator. That display is not part of the formula.
- The page does not estimate the profit, look up prices, or fill in a typical budget. The total stays in the browser.

Before you use the result
Does this use typical startup costs?
No. Every amount starts at zero. A zero is an empty line, not a suggested price. The tool does not look up furniture prices, permit fees, or other budgets.
What do the categories count?
They count the cash you type. Safety items can include smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms, and a first aid kit you buy. Permits and licenses are fees you enter. Deposits are included when you want that cash in the total, including a deposit you expect back. Setup cleaning is the cleaning before the first guest, not a per-stay cleaning fee. The page does not say which items or permits a local rule requires.
How do custom lines work?
Each custom line has a name and an amount. The amount is added once, in the custom lines total. It is not added to a suggested category. You can add 20 lines. A blank name is shown as an untitled line, and the amount still counts. A name is kept up to 80 characters.
How are months to recoup calculated?
The startup cost is divided by the monthly net profit you enter. If that profit is zero, or it rounds to zero, the months are unavailable. This page does not estimate the profit. The break-even calculator can estimate months from a nightly rate, occupancy, and costs you enter on that page. The total here is not sent there.
Can I use another currency?
Yes. Choose USD, EUR, GBP, CAD, AUD, or DOP, then enter every amount in that currency. The selector changes labels and formatting only. It does not convert exchange rates.
Is this tax, legal, or safety advice?
No. It is a planning total of amounts you enter. Confirm permits, deposits, and safety items for the property yourself.
